Two Roles. One Visual Language: Why the FX6 + FX3 Pairing Just Works
Shooting “The Answers” by EliJah: Why the FX6 + FX3 Camera Package Was the Perfect Pairing
One Location. Two Cameras. No Compromises.
We recently partnered with artist EliJah to shoot the music video for his latest release, The Answers. The entire video was filmed at a single location—a retro-style car wash filled with light, texture, and atmosphere. And while the set stayed the same, our visual coverage needed contrast: locked-off control for the performance sections, and fast, fluid movement for detailed B-roll. That’s where the FX6 + FX3 camera combo proved invaluable.
The FX6: Precision Where It Matters
For our static performance shots, the FX6 delivered exactly what we needed—clean, intentional frames with cinematic control. The built-in electronic ND filters allowed us to fine-tune exposure on the fly without touching aperture, shutter speed, or ISO. That meant we stayed locked to the camera’s native ISO of 800, preserving maximum image quality and consistency.
When time is tight and light is constantly shifting—as it often is on fast-paced outdoor shoots—this kind of control is a game-changer. The FX6 essentially became our anchor: a workhorse camera for high-end tripod shots that didn’t require constant fuss or resets. It gave us the confidence to build the video’s foundation with clarity and stability.
The FX3: Agility Without Sacrifice
On the other end, the FX3 gave us the freedom to move fast. Lightweight, compact, and equipped with in-body image stabilization, it was the perfect B-cam for detail work. We used it handheld to capture reflections, textures, lens flares—anything we didn’t want to overthink or over-rig. No tripod, no gimbal—just shoulder, eye, and instinct.
The FX3’s size and stabilization allowed us to treat B-roll almost like still photography in motion. We could weave through tight spaces, crouch low for tire-level shots, or push in on beaded water across a hood—all in seconds. And thanks to the shared sensor architecture, matching it to the FX6 in post was effortless.
More Than a Music Video Setup
While this shoot was built around a music video, the same logic applies far beyond the creative world. If we were filming a brand commercial, the FX6 would be ideal for locked interviews or precision product shots, while the FX3 would shine in the field—capturing action, context, and spontaneous texture. In a corporate setting, the FX6 could handle polished sit-downs and keynote coverage, while the FX3 could roam event floors, facility interiors, or customer interactions—all with speed and minimal setup.
This pairing isn’t just about having two cameras—it’s about having two roles filled by tools that speak the same visual language. You get image consistency without giving up flexibility. You get control and momentum.
Why This Combo Works
The FX6 and FX3 share the same sensor and color science, but diverge where it counts: form factor, features, and workflow. The FX6 brings built-in ND, better monitoring tools, and robust I/O for serious production. The FX3 brings speed, size, and the ability to operate anywhere with minimal gear. Together, they function like a two-person crew—always in sync, never stepping on each other’s toes.
The Takeaway
Whether you're shooting a music video, a commercial, or a corporate piece, this combo offers a rare balance: one camera that gives you full technical control, and another that lets you run and gun without compromise. For The Answers, that meant never choosing between image quality and efficiency—we got both.
